…More About Wood Columns
Turncraft Architectural sets the industry standard for wood columns in design and quality. Unlike cast columns, all orders are custom milled. Turncraft wood columns provide the crispest details and are closest to true architectural proportions, fluting and entasis (bowed taper). Historical restoration projects benefit from Turncraft’s ability to provide materials and craftsmanship that closely matches original millwork.
Turncraft Architectural is known for architecturally correct wood columns; however, they can also provide a variety of configurations, styles and shapes when you need custom designs. For example, in addition to classic entasis, Turncraft offers non-tapered, straight tapered or “belly” columns (wide in the middle, tapered top and bottom). Squares, rectangles, and octagons are also available.
For exterior use, we recommended cedar column shafts because of its resistance to insects and rot. Exterior cedar columns have a ten-year limited warranty. Pine is also available for exterior use, with a one-year limited warranty. Standard caps and bases for exterior columns are usually polyurethane (up to 16” columns) or fiberglass (18” and larger) but wood caps and bases can be provided. For interior use, Turncraft manufactures columns from a wide variety of woods. Paint grade interior woods are typically finger-jointed pine or poplar. Stain grade is available in most species. The most popular stain grade species are red oak, mahogany, cherry, maple, alder, and walnut.
